Caught in the Act
Woman arrested for 'My Grandfather Road' graffiti faces 3 years in jail

A 25-year-old woman who calls herself SKL0 was arrested on Sunday as she is believed to have painted 'My Grandfather Road' on several roads in Singapore.

The graffiti was found along Robinson Road and Maxwell Road. Paint-stained stencils as well as circular stickers bearing captions like 'Press Until Shiok' were found at her home by police. These had been found pasted on a pavement around Lau Pa Sat and on a road traffic sign along Robinson Road.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) had reported the acts of vandalism ot the police from May 17 to 21, after 'My Grandfather Road' was painted. They are also working with the police on earlier reports of the road stickers pasted on other pedestrian crossings in Singapore.

The case is classified as Vandalism under Section 3 of the Vandalism Act, Chapter 341. A person who is convicted for the offence shall be punished with a fine not exceeding $2,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding to 3 years and shall be liable to caning subjected to the Criminal Procedure Code 2010.

Police warned that they take a serious view of such irresponsible actions and said offenders will be dealt with severely.

STOMPer Rachel sent in photos of the graffiti, while STOMPer Maud wrote in with his thoughts:

"Okay, so many of my friends are thinking hey, it's street art, why arrest her for her creativity; where is the freedom of expression here?

"However, look. Do you REALLY want our roads to end up splashed with graffiti and stickers pasted everywhere? How unsightly!

"Plus the government will need to spend money cleaning up the mess. Do you know how much that will cost us in taxes?

"If we allowed everyone to do this, Singapore would be a mess! And we're already so tiny.

"I agree her art is entertaining and she is talented, but do it the right way! Surely there can be a better way than to vandalise public spaces?

"If a loan shark runner were to paint a funny slogan on your door or splash paint creatively on your door, would you still laugh it off and let it go?

"Think about it. NO! You would hate that right? So think about it, this character is vandalising your home.

"And despite previous warnings received, she continued to paste stickers and even defaced the public road. That was going too far."

People say that "This is our home", so why don't we have the right to decorate it as we like. Isn't this her home too? Perhaps instead of putting down her creativity, we should look at how we could provide an avenue for such people to express themselves. If your kid doodles on the wall, would you punish him/her severely each time? It would make more sense to show him/her that doodling on a paper is a much better option. We see billboard spaces at bus-stops for organizations to post their advertisements. Why not create similar spaces for such artistic minded individuals to express themselves. It would also be something interesting for commuters to look at while they wait for the bus. Instead of just being "manipulated" by business advertisements.
