Cherry did not expect that a guy with the fairest and smoothest complexion in her class would wait for her for seven years and they would end up together.
She recounted:
"It never occurred to me that this fair, “pretty-face” guy would become the person I love.
"In 2003, at 13 years old, we were classmates for an English class in Vietnam.
"I knew him as the most mischievous and noisy, as well as the guy who has the fairest and smoothest complexion compared to anyone I knew, and I hated him so much just because he looked like a girl.
"To a girl who was ignorant like me, he was a small kid who always irritated and annoyed me.
"The worst thing happened to me that time was that he transferred from his Secondary school to my Secondary school, and his class was just beside my class! The disturbance from him then increased from that extra English class- once per week, to a daily basis.
"My friends defended him by saying 'if a guy disturbs you, means he likes you', did not do any good for my impression of him.
"He soon became a person who passed through my life and was forgotten once I left Vietnam for my education in Singapore.
"I adapted myself with new culture, new friends and new relationships in this foreign country. He was never once brought up in my memories.
"Six years past quickly without me realizing it.
"That guy, who was once the irritating guy in my mind, left Vietnam for his further studies too. Messages and notes in my facebook which hinted to me that he has come to Singapore were ignored and forgotten. I was even hoping that he will leave me alone.
"However it did not stop him from contacting me.
:After realizing that this guy was really thick-skinned, I gave up and answered his comments and messages.
"Finding out that he was not as childish as I really thought he was, we contacted through facebook more often, but it was still kept to the minimum.
"One year later, it was until year 2010 that I broke up with my abusive ex-boyfriend because he had another girl. I cried so much and was so depressed, he was one of the people amongst my friends who supported me and picked me up through those painful times.
"I often sought advices from him whenever I was down and lost. He was always there listening to me even when he had to call overseas to Vietnam during my visit back there.
"I slowly became happy and cheerful again, and of course I accepted to go out with him. Through all our outings, I could feel how much he cares for me. However the hurt from the past relationship was the barrier for me to step any further.
"After going out for many times, having many distant calls when I was in China for study trip and Vietnam for visit, exchanging hundreds of messages, he took that chance to get closer to me.
"It was until that faithful day we went out for dinner, he had asked his housemates to help him to arrange candles and light them up in his living room. As I walked into his house, I was astounded by the giant heart shape of candles and the video he made for me was playing on the TV.
"He then turned me to face him and confessed to me. He let me know how he had waited for this day since 7 years ago. No words could describe how touched and happy I was.
"His persistent love really moved me.
"Since we became a couple, there was not a single day we never met each other, even when I went out with my friends, I would still come by and meet him before I went home. He showed me how much I meant to him, he even cried whenever he thought back of how abusive my ex-boyfriend was to me in the past.
"He always tolerates my stubbornness even when I was unreasonably angry at him for nothing. Being a guy who does not talk with butterfly and rainbows in his words, he still makes sure I know how much he cares.
"There is no obstacle that we have to overcome yet. But I believe in every relationship, the trip will not always be smooth, and I know that whatever comes our way, we will be able to solve it together.
"Many of our friends gave us blessing and call us the 'twinnies-couple Jason and Cherry' because of our look-alike faces. I feel so blessed to have him in my life.
"Vietnam was where we met; Singapore is where our love grows."
